About Jane

Hello – I am Jane Malyon and I’m delighted to welcome you to my blog.

Apart from a great interest in Toronto, which can’t but help seep into my blog, there are a few areas about which I’m passionate …and they have an indirect connection:

Confident Communication skills (rapport, listening, presenting, public speaking) – and I train in this area

Youngsters/parenting – oh I love a stroppy teen – and offer parenting strategies, couples coaching and 1-1 coaching of the youngsters too.

English Cream Tea - my newest and most popular business delivering the whole afternoon tea in a glamorous box to you!  Check it out at www.englishcreamtea.com

These three interlink because afternoon tea is all about interacting with other people beautifully, passing the cakes and sandwiches, looking at each other, listening, smiling and chatting.  It’s being in rapport – and a great English Cream Tea is the perfect medium to bring that about!  Communication is at the heart of all good things between humans – and the best parenting is about good communication.  Creating opportunities for that (ie yummy afternoon tea!) is a cunning plan!  I even work afternoon tea into my business aspect too, because I also organise The Great Big Business Tea Party twice a year: awesome networking over tea – perfect!  Click here for details of the next date and event!

How did you develop your niche in Parent Coaching and ‘stroppy’ Teens?

Well, about 12 years ago, a pal was finishing her Master Practitioner training and asked me to be a Guinea Pig on which to practise.  I thought it was fascinating and signed up to a ‘taster’ course…after which I thoroughly got the bug!  The training over the next couple of years gave me, on a personal level, a new sense of resourcefulness as well as some great new tools for parenting our exceptionally (I kid you not) challenging, lively and outside-the-box teens!  In essence, my tools are based on being able to establish rapport with your youngsters (and how to re-establish it if it’s lost at the moment!)…and how to communicate in a way that they’re prepared to listen and likely to respond positively.  Yay!  So now I offer supportive coaching to parents privately or through half day events – and I also coach the youngsters too, with lovely success stories resulting.

I’m now writing my 3rd book on a fascinating new Parenting niche – see next para!

What’s your latest parenting book about?

It has a working title of Raising Millionaires - and is about what we can do as parents, to make the difference so that our children go on to be amongst the superstar employees or the amazing entrepreneurs of this world.  With sometimes 300 applicants for one graduate job, just getting our kids to university isn’t the answer.   I’ve done some work with the local authorities on this topic and have been told by employers that school leavers are often ‘not fit for purpose’.  So as the schools and universities are clearly not employment agency training locations, it’s down to us parents to begin the right processes when we’re raising our children, so that they can go on to be successes in business.  The book is planned to be finished at Christmas 2010 for publication around Easter 2011 – let me know if you’re interested.

What’s your Business Group Training about?

My speciality is Effective Communication.  Ineffective communication seems to be behind conflict, lack of sales, frustrated customers, missed opportunities and so on. I offer bespoke training and occasional courses on a number of communication-based topics eg:

  • Public Speaking and Presentation Success
  • NLP basics
  • Networking Skills and Memorable 60 Second Slots
  • Dealing with Stressful Situations

Just contact me if you’d like powerful, memorable, interactive training for yourself or your staff.  Location and catering can be provided too.

How did you get into Public Speaking?

jane malyon event speaker3 150x150 About JaneAs a woman, of course, talking comes easily to me!  Ha.  ‘Forced’ into elocution lessons as a child, I always had a ‘projected’ voice too.  Then, one day, nearly 30 years ago – at a social group I was attending, the booked speaker didn’t turn up.  I was persuaded to stand in for the missing speaker – and found I could speak off the cuff for 45 minutes – and  the audience seemed to laugh a lot too.  So, either my clothing was very funny, or perhaps I had stumbled onto a new niche!   I’ve enjoyed speaking to groups of all sizes, ever since – both business organisations and events and for social groups.

Jane as a Writer

When something comes ‘easily’ to you, it’s sometimes easy to overlook it!  I’ve always enjoyed writing and really like words (I’m pretty good at Scrabble too!) and my drawers are filled with unfinished books, stories, film scripts and poems (aagh!).   For 20 years I’ve written a small column in a local magazine – and for 20 years, people have been stopping me in the street to tell me how much they enjoy it and how they look forward to reading it each month.  Gradually I started to take my own writing a bit more seriously.  If  it’s something I love to do (and can do it anywhere, whether I’m visiting Toronto or somewhere else!) and others like reading it….well – it’s a no-brainer really!  Then I started to take on article writing…then website pages for other people, press releases, brochures, proforma letters, speeches, network presentations, sales material, adverts and ghost writing for an established author etc etc…and I think that now means, after all these years, that I am a writer!  You can buy my ebook Parenting By Stealth…  – and if you want any articles about coaching, parenting and so on, just let me know  (jane.malyon AT havebedo.co.uk) and I’ll get that sorted!

Maybe Unexpected

o     Three years ago, at the age of 51 (rather late in the day), I took and passed my black belt grading in Kyokushinkai knockdown karate.  Yay!  Of course, I’m still having osteopathy as a result!

o       I was a balloon artist for some years and once was commissioned to make a 6′ tall Amazonian lady out of balloons.  She was somewhat anatomically correct too!  All very odd.

o       I acquired Canadian citizenship (as well as being British) 5 years ago and love travelling across the country and spending lots of time in Toronto too.

o       Hubby and I have had great fun putting on very over-the-top parties for our family’s birthdays/events – mediaeval banquet at pledgdon barn 150x150 About Janeand for one of our son’s Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Party, we painted the interior of our small wooden barn with melted chocolate, complete with chocolate curtains.  The local insects were thrilled.  The children were too actually!  It was easier putting it on than taking it off, alas.  For our Silver Wedding party, we had a Mediaeval Banquet complete with knights in shining armour.tipi in our garden2 150x150 About Jane

o       We have a full-sized native American pow-wow tipi in our English garden.  As you do.  Don’t  you?g fire 150x150 About Jane

o       One of my twitter names is AuntieJaney – on which I put a daily idea of something fun to do with the children.  Bless ‘em.  Mind you, I’ll be careful what I suggest:  allowing our sons to have a Fire Party when they were younger (aren’t all young lads fascinated with fire?) led to a very unwise hobby.  Sigh.

Happy Days

I’ve so enjoyed being a trainer and an NLP Master Practitioner Coach.  It’s enabled me to meet some rather wonderful people really and since the year 2000, I’ve been coaching business and personal clients (including youngsters), writing and giving talks.  Great stuff.

When not doing any of that, I attend and run many networking groups.  I also play the piano, paint watercolours and create annoying quizzes.  Hschool ball 029 150x150 About Janeowever, most vitally, I’m a mother of 2 wickedly amazing sons (whom I miss dreadfully now they’ve left home!) and a wife and support to Roger, who runs a beautiful wedding event barn (ancient Pledgdon Barn www.barnevents.co.uk ), outside catering co. Country Cuisine Ltd and a part-time Supper Club.  I’m a walking advert for his great cooking!
